A Weekend Long Hospital Stay

Hopefully this isn't too long...who am I kidding...it's going to be long.

Holden had started wheezing again on Thursday and by Saturday it had gotten much worse so we decided to take him to Urgent Care [big mistake!] after sitting there for over 2 hours, we saw the doctor. The doctor who apparently sucks. He listened to him and told me his lungs sound great- ummm no they don't. Then he proceeds to say a bunch of gibberish so I ask if he should be breathing as fast as he is [ya know a dr should check that]. He listened and timed his breathing...92. It should be under 60. He made a call to Children's and they told us to come in.

So we head home to grab some thing & to drop Henry off with my mom. & we were off to Children's. We got all checked in and had his oxygen tested...it was way low- like around 88/89. It should be close to 100. They then decided it was time for an x-ray. The doctor came in shortly after that to tell us that Holden has pneumonia but he also wanted to run a few more tests and draw some blood/get fluids & antibiotics going.

So in came the blood suckers [as I call them] to take my wee baby boy's blood & start an IV. I immediately started to panic. I vividly remember Henry's terrifying screams when he had his IV as a wee baby. First attempt- fail- they got enough blood for the blood tests but weren't successful in getting the IV in. Cue the mommy tears. They tried again in his other hand and thankfully they got it in. I scooped him up as soon as they were done and he calmed down pretty quickly. I will say I HATE seeing my baby's blood, especially on sheets and towels :(

Daddy cuddles make everything better. & tell me he doesn't look gigantic!!

The blood and mucus tests came back and his white blood cell count was pretty high which indicated he has some kind of infection & he was also positive for RSV. They continued to monitor his oxygen levels which would fluctuate quite a bit and would dip down below 90 when he feel asleep. That's when the dr informed us we would be staying the night. So Ryan ran home to grab the bare minimum of things we needed [he forgot shampoo so I had to wash my hair with hand soap :( ] and got Henry situated with his parents.

While Ryan was gone I just laid with my sweet boy as he slept- he was on an oxygen mask to keep his levels up, it was cute little penguin mask. They then told me they would wanted to run a urine test to make sure he doesn't have a UTI. Yeah they would have to use a catheter to do that. I panicked again. Thankfully Ryan walked in the room literally as they were getting it all prepped. It was not fun, I can tell you that much. Oh and it was negative.

We got all moved up to our room and settled in for the night...the long night. Thankfully Holden slept pretty well considering he was hooked up to a number of machines.

I still cry when I see this one.

He didn't need any oxygen overnight- thank goodness! But he was still wheezing and laboring to breathe. The doctor made his rounds and said he thinks it would be a good idea for us to stay another night. Ryan was itching to go home but I wasn't totally comfortable going home with his breathing the way it was. They continued to monitor him and all of his levels staying within normal ranges.

Still our happy wee boy.

By yesterday morning [Sunday] things were much better and although he was still wheezing a bit, it was not nearly as bad as it was the day before. The dr came in again and said he was much more comfortable sending us home.

Holden was getting excited to go home.

So a little more than 48 hours after we checked in, we were home & my boys were reunited.

They weren't excited or anything!! :)

All in all it was a very tiring weekend but I will never, ever take for granted my boys when they are healthy. Lets hope we don't have to pay Children's another visit anytime soon.

Poor Holden and mommy :( What a long and tough weekend. I second urgent care doctors, I hate them and I think they are a bunch of idiots (well, the ones I've been too) I'm so glad you all are home and Holden is better.

P.S. The picture of Holden and Ryan... ADORAABLE! Nothing like a daddy's love :)

So glad to hear that Holden is doing better! That has to be scary and no one wants to see their baby sick, or sad. I am glad that you questioned the doctor, I can't believe he didn't pay attention to his breathing. Wah! I have been thinking about you and your family & am glad for a positive update. Thanks for sharing!

Those first two pictures made me cry, that poor little man. But the cute pic of the boys together made me smile, so all is well again. So thankful that both of your boys are doing well again--so sorry you had to go through all that stress!

The second picture of Holden sleeping made me tear up. I have a 16 month old little boy myself so it hits close to home. With that said, I'm so glad he's doing better. Hooray for healthy babies!
