Adventures in Breastfeeding

I have been meaning to post a couple of my funny breastfeeding stories for the last week & finally both boys are sleeping at the same time so now is the time :)

Ok so me, my sister & Holden [Henry was at school] made a quick trip to Mall of America and of course I knew Holden would have to eat. I hadn't pumped anything in advance so I figured I would just nurse him at the mall. Which I did. We ploped down on a bench and I got out my trusty cover and we were ready. I guess I don't really think twice about nursing in public but this was my official first time, so I was a bit nervous- I didn't want to give anyone a boob show. But anyways...this older man comes by and glances into the stroller to take a peek at the baby, which of course he wasn't in there since he was nursing. The man just kinda looked confused and walked away [didn't say a word]. About 45 seconds later the old man is back...looks into the stroller again- as if we magically put him in there in the few seconds he was gone. Nope, and he gave us another weird look and walked away for good this time, never saying a word. So weird.

A few hours later it was time to go pick Henry up. Holden had only eaten off one side so I knew as soon as we all got home I would have to feed him as the engorgement pain was setting in. So my sister and I went into Henry's school...I chatted with a few of his teachers and we left. As I was putting Henry into his carseat my sister noticed a HUGE wet circle on my shirt...yup I was a leaking freak. Never has it happened to me in public- at home, yes. So there I was picking up Henry and I had a leaky boob. Nice.

& my last story [for today] happened this morning...I was feeding Holden and pumping at the same time [trying to build my freezer stash for when I go back to work in 7 weeks :(] when Henry walks up to me on the couch saying "baby". He then takes a closer look and sees that there is something there besides his baby. He looks at my pump...looks at me...looks at the pump, all while he has the most confused look on his face. He then takes his little pointer finger and starts touching the pump part [no idea what it's called] that is attached to me. He then points at the bottle catching the milk and says "baba". He made the connection. It was oh so adorable :)

I never thought I would enjoy nursing as I didn't have a good experience at all with Henry but I am glad I decided to give it a try and now I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. It's so weird how experiences the second time around can be so extremely different :)

Such a smart little boy! And great to hear that what you experience the first time might not be what you experience the second time around:)

Those are great stories! I loves breast feeding as well. I'm looking forward to doing it again with this little one.
I like the story about your oldest son the best. So cute that he knew just what you were doing...well not JUST what you were doing but that what was happening was FOOD :)
Oh and the old man...?? What's with that? lol

So glad to know it can be totally different the second time around. I only have one now but was worried about the next one since I had such a low supply that I had to supplement with formula and after about 6 weeks exclusively formula feed which is not what I had hoped. Thanks for the hope! Glad to hear it's going so well!

I've leaked in front of friends and not known about it until my husband TEXTED me from across the room. How awkward!!!! I was soo embarrassed.

Thanks for sharing these stories. The old man one made me giggle. Sean was carrying Ciaran one day in the grocery store and I had put a loaf of bread in the carrier in the cart and this lady walked by and did a double take and asked where the "baby" was. lol.

I love that Henry made the connection.
